IDF Says Hamas Operative Posing as Journalist Was Targeted in Gaza Strike
Military states individual combined media role with weapons development and operational planning
The Israel Defense Forces announced that it carried out a targeted operation resulting in the killing of a senior Hamas figure described as a weapons production operative (פעיל ייצור נשק) [pa'il yitzur neshek] and field commander. According to the military, the individual was identified as posing an immediate threat, leading to the decision to conduct a targeted strike (תקיפה ממוקדת) [tkifa memukedet] in the Gaza Strip.
The operation was executed by forces operating under the Southern Command after intelligence assessments classified the individual as a concrete threat (איום ממשי) [iyum mamashi] to Israeli troops. The strike followed ongoing monitoring and intelligence gathering related to his activities within Hamas infrastructure.
According to military statements, the individual held a central role within Hamas’ weapons development network (מערך פיתוח נשק) [ma'arach pituach neshek], contributing to the production of drones, rockets, and advanced explosive devices. His work was described as part of a broader effort to enhance the group’s operational capabilities in the ongoing conflict.
Officials also stated that the individual maintained a dual identity, functioning publicly as a journalist while simultaneously acting as a militant operative. This alleged dual role (תפקיד כפול) [tafkid kaful] enabled him to move across areas with fewer restrictions, facilitating weapons transfer (העברת אמצעי לחימה) [ha'avarat emtza'ei lechima] and gathering information used in planning attacks.
The military further asserted that the individual used his media affiliation as operational cover (כיסוי מבצעי) [kisui mivtza'i], allowing him to conceal activities related to intelligence collection and coordination of attacks. In an official statement, the IDF said: "Washah operated under the guise of an Al Jazeera journalist, exploiting this identity in order to advance terrorist activities against IDF forces and the State of Israel."
Earlier in the year, the military had released material it said demonstrated the connection between the individual’s media work and his involvement in militant operations. These findings were cited as part of the justification for the strike, which the military framed within its broader efforts to disrupt hostile capabilities and prevent further attacks.
