Schools Reopen Nationwide as Restrictions Ease Following Ceasefire
Most of Israel resumes normal activity while northern regions remain under partial limitations due to security risks
Educational institutions across most of Israel are set to resume operations following the lifting of wartime restrictions (הגבלות זמן מלחמה) [hagbalot zman milchama] announced by the Home Front Command. The changes come as a fragile ceasefire (הפסקת אש שברירית) [hafsakat esh shvirit] between the United States and Iran takes hold, allowing schools to reopen for the first time since late February.
The easing of restrictions enables a return to routine in large parts of the country, with educational activities (פעילויות חינוכיות) [pe'iluyot chinuchiyot] and workplaces resuming normal schedules. However, not all regions are included in the full reopening, as authorities continue to assess ongoing threats and adjust safety measures accordingly.
In northern Israel, specific limitations remain due to the continued risk of rocket fire threats (איומי ירי רקטות) [iyumei yeri rakotot] from Lebanon. In these areas, schools are permitted to operate only under strict conditions, including the requirement that activities take place within protected shelters (מרחבים מוגנים) [merchavim muganim] to ensure rapid access to safety in the event of an attack.
Additional guidelines in affected northern zones include restrictions on public gatherings (התקהלויות ציבוריות) [hitkahaluyot tziburiyot], limiting outdoor assemblies to 50 people and indoor gatherings to 200. Workplaces are allowed to function only if adequate shelter is available nearby, reflecting a continued emphasis on immediate protective measures.
In contrast, most other regions across the country have seen nearly all restrictions lifted, though some caps remain in place, such as limits on large gatherings of up to 1,000 individuals. These measures reflect a transition toward normalcy while maintaining a degree of caution amid uncertain security conditions.
The updated directives came into effect early in the morning and are scheduled for reassessment within hours, highlighting the temporary nature of guidelines (אופי זמני של ההנחיות) [ofi זמני shel hahanchayot] and the reliance on ongoing security evaluations. Authorities indicated that conditions may be extended or modified based on developments.
Ahead of reopening, preparations included coordination between the military, local authorities, and the Education Ministry, as well as nationwide checks for unexploded ordnance (תחמושת שלא התפוצצה) [tachmoshet shelo hitpotzetza] near schools. These measures aim to reduce potential hazards and support a safe return for students.
With approximately 2.5 million children returning to classrooms after weeks of disruption, officials have emphasized the importance of addressing student emotional well-being (רווחה רגשית של תלמידים) [revacha rigshit shel talmidim]. Schools have been instructed to adapt schedules and provide support as needed to help students readjust to in-person learning after prolonged exposure to wartime conditions.
Local municipalities across central regions, including major urban areas, confirmed readiness to resume full educational operations immediately, while some communities retained the option to delay reopening if additional preparation time was required.
